Entry Rules Explained

Every country sets its own conditions for letting travelers in - but most fall into the same handful of categories. Here's what to check before any international trip, and where the Schengen-specific rules differ.

6 Months
Typical minimum passport validity required beyond your stay
Visa or Visa-Free
Depends entirely on your passport and destination
Proof of Funds
Many countries ask you to show you can support your trip
Insurance
Mandatory for a Schengen visa, recommended everywhere else

Travel Document Rules

Most countries require your passport to be valid for a set period beyond your planned departure - commonly three to six months. Some also require at least one or two blank visa pages. Rules vary by country, so check your specific destination well before booking.

Visa Status

Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality and destination, and can range from visa-free entry, to an online e-visa or authorisation, to a full consulate application. Schengen entry alone covers 29 countries under one set of requirements - see our Schengen visa guides for the details.

Funds, Accommodation & Insurance

Many destinations expect you to show proof you can support yourself - a bank statement, a return ticket, confirmed accommodation - and a growing number, the Schengen Area among them, require proof of travel medical insurance meeting a minimum coverage amount before they'll issue a visa.

Rules Vary by Destination

A passport that travels visa-free through dozens of countries might still need ETIAS registration before a Schengen trip. A passport from elsewhere might need a full visa for that same trip. There's no universal checklist - only your passport-and-destination combination tells you what actually applies.

The safest approach: check your destination's official immigration or consulate page close to your travel date, and treat any second-hand summary - including this one - as a starting point rather than the final word.
